Ed's Note: This original script,
like the shows, were pretty raw, and because the Internet always changes,
some pages aren't accessible anymore, or have changed url's. For the sake
of having an accurate record of the internet AND Cleveland's Alt. scene
at this point in history, I'm not changing any of the script...er, ah,
and I'm a little bz for all that work anyway. However I'll add new websites
or any changes as you read along. "End-joy" :-)

Bull/McHales Navy theme It's Wednesday night, and like every Wednsday it's time for our weekly program where we help you navigate the internet, saving you all sorts of money in online charges by telling you about the best in Musical websites, with The End Web's own Webmaster... Tonight's theme is Search engines. People not familier with the World WideWeb are intimidated by how much information is out there and how to get around on the 'net. Search engines are a tool you can use to take advantage of the power of the 'net. This weekend I was in the Lakewood Library, which is the only Library in Northeast Ohio to give people free access to the World Wide Web (back in '95), and I met a friend who manages a local band. I showed him the End Web, and a few of these search engines we'll talk about tonight, and he was there for 2 hours looking up topics from entertainment law to harmonica festivals...he loved it. He had mastered the web. These search engines empower people to cut to the chase as far as finding out info so let's get to them. First of all, where are they? Well. our sponsor, Cybergate, has a great collection of search engines and indexes on its home page. To get to it, first visit The End Web, and go into "What's New". Our what's New section always has the latest changes to The End Web listed, what new bands are up, or Inner Sanctum playlist added, that sort of thing. We also have information about the "website" program, what the next topic is, and link from there to our sponsor, Cybergate! Use that link to get to their homepage. The have three seperate sections with "Navigational" tools, and we'll talk about each one tonight. The first has index's and directories. They're using 3 different ones,

Yahoo page... The LLNL list of lists is run by the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, run by the cool cybergeeks at the University of California and the Department of energy. Their motto...more leaves, less branches. They only have 8 main topic branches, and these are connected directly to websites for the most part, like in their Publications on the 'net branch they lead you directly to "Wired" magazines' website. The Planet Earth database (Not around anymore), well if you could measure information by the pound, this place would have Tons! Run by the Naval Command Control and Ocean Surveillance Center in San Diego, CA. It has all sorts of "Planetary" Information, Country Info, "Pointers to Pointers that point to other pointers". If you were out in Space, ivestigating Earth, The Planet Earth database would tell you everything about our planet you could want to know, except, is there a place on earth cold enough for Art Modell? All these delivered to you by Cybergate. Check 'em out through The End Web's What's New Section. What's new on the net with this next band is....The Red Hot Chili Pepper's website now has a chat forum page. It's moderated. It's not real-time but it does have comments and questions about the Chili Peppers from all over the world, with e-mail addresses so you can reply directly to the person posting the message or you can shoot your question straight to the list. |

Rap: Bull: We're back with website, our weekly program, where we help you navigate the 'net and find cool musical websites through The End Web with the help of The Webmaster... Thanks, We're talking about Search engines tonight, the tools I use to find cool websites to link up through the End Web. our sponsor Cybergate, has a great "Tool Box" full of these programs on it's home page, and you can get to them through the "What's New" section of the End Web. Before we talked about indexes, these are hierarchical tools that when you type in "Music" they give you branches of types of music to follow "Rock, Reggae, etc. until you get all the way to the end of the branch, "the leaf" which is the actual website. Search engines are different in that they'll bring you everything they can find that's music related. You can imagine this could be pretty confusing, so it's good to know how these work so you can narrow your search to get exactly what you need. Cybergate uses three, Info Seek, LYCOS and Webcrawler... Info seek is actually a service people pay money to subscribe to (in the old daze...nowadays it's free), it's that comprehensive. But Cybergate offers a special version of it to people. When you use it you put in a "keyword" like "Rancid" and it'll give you up to 10 websites per earch. For people who pay, it'll give them up to 100! If you're good enough asking for the right combinations of keywords, like "rancid" and "Music" and "timebomb" you'll get to the right page about that song for that band. If you just typed in "timebomb", well...you might find what comes up handy regarding Art Modell, but not too handy for finding song lyrics. Lycos is another search engine. the letterers of Lycos are the first 5 letters of the latin name for wolf spider, relevent because spider programs are what lycos uses to find information on the Web. There are 3 parts of Lycos, the spiders, the catalog they build, and the search engine which queries that catalog. ...Article (I've lost this article, but here's a web-class I do on Search Engines for LPL that explain this concept better). The third search tool Cybergate offers is Web Crawler, now owned and operated by one of the commercial services but still free for the public. This engine lets you key in special words to look for, and tell it how many websites you want to see results about. All of 'em, only 10? Then if it finds 10 websites, it ranks them in a column with how relevent they are to the search, from 100 to 0. For instance, If one does a search on New York train schedules, it'll pop up with subway schedules first with 100, then go all the way down to "Travel Resources on the Internet" at 005, which won't help a specific search too much, but is relevent. There shouldn't be negative ones on there but if anyone does a search for Cleveland Sports, the Modell homepage would probably get a negative score. Maybe. They also have a cool thing, their top 25 sites, based on URL usage in a variety of categories. If you're curious about the internet's most used websites check this out. (Also, very cool now, they're helping people with MP3's) Did a search for the Nixons and came up with 221 Website documents!
The Nixons WE know and love homepage came it at a 45 rating, but their
music and humor rank a little higher than that, wouldn't you say Bull?

Rap: Bull/Space music Helping you chart the best sites in Cyberspace, this is Website, our Wednesday night tour of the coolest musical websites, with....The webmaster Finally, regarding search engines, our sponsor, Cybergate (Now a part of the Qualnet family of services), has got something on their main website that isn't a Search engine in the purest sense of the word, but is extremely handy for students. Their Student page was designed and put up by students from Chagrin Falls High School and has a ton of information about art schools, business schools, educational topics, recreational topics, grant and scholorship information....everything the 'net offers students of ANY age. It's a great tool that you can use by going through the "What's new" section of the End Web, through the Cybergate link. Regarding those last 2 bands, The End Web is linked up to the Sony Oasis site, but when I was prepping for the show the Oasis link was down temporarily, by using a search engine if I really needed something on the band, I could find it through them. That's what makes these tools so useful. Of course depending how you narrow you search, you might get a lot of info about oasis's in Sub-Sahara Africa too, so, ask wisely! Gem is another example. Ask for Gem & you'll get thousands of references, ask for Gem, Music and Cleveland and you'll narrow it down to the one and only, hard rocking Gem from Cleveland, on 2 websites, the bands' and Restless Records. Check them out through the End Web, and you'll see where they'll be playing in the next few months. Commercial Break

Those were bands with pretty cool websites on the 'net, and I chose them because they have such unique names. Last break we used Gem and Oasis, well the search engines we've talked about tonight, Yahoo, Lycos, webcrawler and the others would bring back tons of info you might not need. Band names like Bjork and Phish, definitely help those engines bring you stuff only about them! And there's a lot. Phish has a very big presence on the 'net, their main site being the "Phish-Net" website, made with cyber-optics not silk. That website is pretty cool, they even have an online chess game going on with their audience. It started two weeks age with Phish using a standard "Portuguese Opening" followed by the "Spanish Inquisition" maneuver...there's commentary and analysis about the game going on with a new move every few days...I know nothing about the finer moves and strategy's of chess but this is fun to read about and explains them a bit. (Good review of it on the above link. Lasted 'til New Year's) Bjork's world of bigtime sensuality is of course an amazing eclectic
website that she had a big hand in designing. It's very cool with all sorts
of poems and insights into her personality and beliefs, she'll be in town
this weekend, that'll be a cool show to check out.

This week we've discussed search engines, and like I said earlier,
this band has such a unique name, that they're easy to find. Oroboros!
Search engine's are useful to cut through all the thousands of sites that
are on the 'net now, and will help give the user a sense of power over
this huge collection of information. The 'net's giving a sense of empowerment
over a lot of aspects of people's lives, knowledge is power. Check it out
and for local bands...an educational forum on how to deal with indie record
stores is happening tomorrow night, starting at 7pm in Lakeood at the Symposium.
For anyone wanting to move CD's or cassettes this Christmas you really
need to be aggressive and proactive and all those other buzz-words...this
seminar will help, a lot of contacts will be there for you, take advantage
of it ! Tomorrow at the Symposium.
This next local band has it's 15 year anniversary coming up a week from Friday, November 17th, at the Euclid Tavern. Oroboros, a Greek name for the snake that bites its tail.... a symbol of continuiity AND change, in many cultures, European, Chinese, American Indian, it means "What Goes Around comes around"...They've been around for 15 years and deserve some strong congratulations and your support for their gigs these next few weeks.(Check out the Jimiller Band's new Website) Local Music OROBOROS / Smell The Roses. |
