Website Show for: 1/05/97 - Sunday 6:00p.m. with Pat the Producer

Ed's Note: This original script, like the shows, were pretty raw, and because the Internet always changes, some pages aren't accessible anymore, or have changed url's. For the sake of having an accurate record of the internet AND Cleveland's Alt. scene at this point in history, I'm not changing any of the script...er, ah, and I'm a little bz for all that work anyway. However I'll add new websites or any changes as you read along. "End-joy" :-)

It's Sunday night, and like every Sunday it's time for our weekly program where we help you navigate the internet, saving you all sorts of money in online  charges by telling you about the best in Musical websites, with The End Web's own Webmaster...

I resolve, to stay better informed in 97. Broaden my horizons, learn more about the world beyond my front doorstep and my Industry outside of The End.  But I can't afford a lot of specialty magazines, so what's a poor webmaster to do? Use the Internet...and I've found some great sites out there that can connect you with thousands of Magazines and newspapers from around the world. We'll be visiting several AND some of the bands websites they connect to, like from Bush, They Might Be Giants, Sonic Youth....stay tuned!

ECOLA - 24 hour a day we never close or hassle you electronic newstand
www.ecola.com (Now newsdirectory.com, a MUCH better name, but it was always a great site)

Billboard

No Doubt sits on top of the chart for a third week. No Links to No Doubt websites....can't believe their playlist isn't hyperlinked like ours is!!!!
Their trivia contest winner from independence!
site is fun & informative, want to come back here

Keeping in mind my NYR they have sneek peek and hot product sections that spotlight up and comers, like this next artist. They say folk is fast growing, I don't know if she likes that niche, but I agree she's expanding her audience base.

We're back with website, our weekly program, where we help you navigate the 'net and find cool musical websites through The End Web with the help of The Webmaster...

Looking at online magazines tonight. If your NYR was to stay better informed, and you don't want to spend money on subscriptions that'll be piling up by March, wasting money and trees, go online. www.encola.com has thousands of newspapers and magazines from across the world.

We've just looked in the Music section and found over 50 magazines, 6 regional
publications...and 14 international ones. For Newspapers, look at Ohio, then gives you surrounding regions as well.

CMJ ONLINE -
www.cmjmusic.com
Lots of charts
(This page really pisses me off. Not that it ISN'T a great source of new music news, but where in Cleveland can we hear any of this? Like Tom Waits? Their  Top Artists of 99 reads like an old "End" playlist)

Favorite section is the Artist of the Day - TMBG
good looking home page;
cow & record on a spit over an animated flame
Cow is labeled Quantity, clickable regions like where you buy sections of meat,
Tours, press clippings
(That particular graphic is gone, but this They Might Be Giants site is great)

BUSH - Menu of Bush

Another Ecola link, and a link on our Hot Links page is Pollstar, www.pollstar.com
Redid the page layout; Keep in touch with Pollstar. Story on Alanis's tour.
Of course to really keep up sign up to the End List & catch Vic's daily cyber-column about the daily rock news. pollstar gossip...

Third Set (2 songs)
Alanis

Helping you chart the best sites in Cyberspace, this is Website, our Sunday night tour of the coolest musical websites, with....The webmaster

we’ve been talking about online music magazines tonight, found on a cool website called Ecola.com. Another great source is through our Hot links, the ultimate band list. www.ubl.com

Addicted to Noise! The first online music magazine.
www.addict.com
Heavily frames  intensive site, confusing if you get lost in frames.
(But, now they offer a "Hi /Lo Bandwidth option, which is cool)
Other links we have via the hot links/harborcom page from a local angle coming up next

Commercial Break
You're Listening to WEBSITE, our weekly surf through the best musical websites on the 'net. Back with the Webmaster in a few minutes, but first...

Fourth set: (2 songs)
Nirvana
Sonic Youth

XL music magazine
www.xl-mag.ie
(Gone)
Great tight format at end of article links to sonic youth
Yahoo links nice touch. Run by Internet Ireland, sports-golf courses.

Some places just don’t like links; Cleveland has three strong weekly mags online now & most are pretty heavily inward focused. Scene does a great job with local links, but doesn’t seem to have a lot of national ones. Free times has a nice archive of articles, but no sound bites or outside linkages either. We pulled a page down for Nirvana, and it just had a review reprinted, nothing extra for the Internet, which is too bad.

(Both of these have made some nice changes recently)

US Rocker, Same thing. Think they got a free page somewhere. Tease what’s in current issue. Used to have web exclusive articles but they stopped in October.
(These guys crashed and burned a few years back, losing coverage for a genre which has only recently been picked up by the others)

Happy New Year!

Webmaster, any last words?
Looking forward to keeping my new years resolutions of NOT spilling over my show into the concert hour...and keeping more informed in 97 by using the great resources on the Web...

Hope some of those Cleveland mags online get registered onto ecola and the ubl to help get the word out about our scene. They do cover it pretty well online, although they and the bands could use some more multimedia.  Time will bring a lot of changes in ‘97 that’s for sure.
