Frequently
Asked Questions
These are questions I get a LOT in email, and in person.
What the hell happened to the End???
The End was sold to a company called Radio One, who, after a few months
of market surveys, decided to change the station's format to Urban rap
to be like the other 40 or so Urban Rap stations they own.
How did it happen? Was there any warning? What were
the last days like?
Awful. The format changed in mid May 1999. People had been expecting it
for a while. The last AM Drive announcer, Howie Greene, was let go a few
days prior to the major change before he could say good-bye. To mark
the final change, the mikes were removed from the studios to eliminate
the chances of last minute venting from air personalities. A
long weekend of music from the End's extensive Library was played, mostly
without commercials, but also without song titles. So a number of great
tunes could be recorded on home cassette decks, but unfortunately many
of the great obscure and older one hit wonders remained anonymous. I'd
like to get a run down of the music log for that weekend, but have not
been successful, yet.
The last new record Cleveland was introduced to from the End was Red Hot
Chili Peppers "Scar Tissue". The last 24 hours were like the first 24 hours,
"end"-less loops of R.E.M.'s "It's The End Of The World As We Know It".
Did The End go broke?
Unfortunately, The End WAS a money-maker, but because it had a small transmission
range, it was eventually sold to a firm that wanted solid coverage on Cleveland's
East Side. The audience demographics fit well with all the other stations
they owned.
Is there a new alternative station now in Cleveland?
Yes. You can visit extremeradio93.com and check 'em out, they're pretty
cool.
What happened to the DJ's the End had over the years?
A number of these DJ's I have not been able to contact. However, I've linked
their web pages for those that have 'em, and to the best of my knowledge
the rest I know about who is still DJ'ing and who's not is down below:
What ever happened to:
Brian and Joe?
They left prior to all the big ownership changes. First they went to WMMS
for a couple o' years and are now the Morning team at Mix 106, still a
powerful pair here in their home town of Cleveland.
Bull?
Did record label work outta Chicago shortly after leaving the End. Returned
to Cleveland a few years later as the local market manager for Big Fat
Promotions.
Eric Murphy?
Music Director under Rick Michaels, he'd left to be PD at a station out
west, and was last reported doing record label duties in NYC.
Erin Carmen?
She spent a couple months entertaining Cleveland in the afternoon, b4 heading
off to Detroit to be Music Director at a new start up headed by a previous
local heavy at 'MMS. Since he's gone from there, I'm not sure where she's
jamming, I think I last heard D.C.
Howie Greene?
Headed out to California.
Laura Ford?
Another lady who filled in overnights and early Sunday Mornings. Got a
full time gig somewhere in Ohio after she graduated from John Carroll.
Linda Jackson?
Our Saturday afternoon host, reportedly a DJ with Internet station
The
City Radio, and probably still practicing law as her day gig.
Maria Farina?
Voted as one of Cleveland's favorite radio personalities for her afternoon
show at WENZ, she's been doing the same duty here in C-town at various
stations.
Number One Son?
Last late evening DJ after Pat the Producer, he's off air but still continued
working behind the scenes at the new Kiss 1079 after the change-over.
Currently, whereabouts are unknown.
Pat the Producer?
Host of the popular as hell Deep End late night show, he's gone into
his own programming business.
Pete the Dog?
Managing area record stores and working with a techno oriented website,
BeatFlow
.
Rick Michaels?
The REAL original End Program Director (there'd been one from the disco
Y108 briefly in the beginning), last I heard was working as doing record
rep duties.
Rick O'Bannion?
Rick's main gig is running a local ISP, and managing a Horse farm
on Cleveland's Southwest side. For kicks, he's keeping involved with entertaining
people, DJing at the 5 O'Clock Lounge on Fry-day nights, W. 119th &
Detroit in Lakewood.
Rocco?
Rocco's now off the air but still here in Cleveland with his family, and
working professionally as Kiss 1079's Chief Engineer.
Sue from the Overnight show?
After giving the new owners a large piece of her mind she's back working
behind the scenes in Cleveland's concert industry and as a DJ with WNCX.
Ted Kowalski?
Stayed working in Cleveland as Kiss 1079's Production Manager. Now is over
at WDOK 102.1 in the same capacity.
Tobin?
Still lives in Tremont, causing trouble and having fun, from what I understand.
Vic Gideon?
The End's old News Director is doing news duty at WKYC-TV
3.
That's all I have for now.
